Discover the extraordinary journey of one of CAEP’s turf management alums who ventured from the United Kingdom to the renowned Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA, to participate in a training program at one of the most prestigious golf courses in the world. He even had the chance to assist in preparing the course for the Masters Tournament. Read on to explore Stefan Carter’s growth, learning, and cultural immersion journey, and discover how his training program played a pivotal role in his success.
Dreams Come True at Augusta National Golf Club
Several years ago, ambitious greenkeeper Stefan Carter saw an opportunity to delve into the world of turf management in the United States and embrace a diverse cultural landscape. His motivation was fueled by the promise of CAEP- a commitment to participant success and unwavering support throughout their transformative experiences abroad. “I chose the CAEP program as I heard that they looked after their students throughout their time on the program and offered support if any problems occurred,” Stefan shared.
“I undertook all aspects of setting up the golf course for member play. Most days I would start out with green care then I would fall into hole care which would consist of different tasks to set up the golf course.
I have learned that no matter how good you think you are as a company or person, you can always improve to make things better. Some of the most valuable lessons and skills I learned from my host are never to accept that you are the best. If you stand still, you’re moving backward. Always be looking at the little details. It’s this that puts you aside from the rest.
I have also learned that high standards cannot be achieved by one person alone and that it takes a large team of highly trained staff working together to produce these standards.
Throughout the year, Augusta National holds a number of formal and informal social gatherings, such as dinner parties, sporting events, and educational events.
One of the happiest moments of my entire experience was preparing the golf course for the Masters. This was a special few months for me. Seeing the sunset on Amen Corner brought a tear to my eyes knowing how few people ever get to be a part of this wonderful golf club. My host club provided me with everything that I needed for a great learning experience.”
Life in the United States- Exploring the Culture
Stefan’s exchange experience in the USA was nothing short of extraordinary. Living with another golf course intern just minutes away from the club offered convenience and camaraderie. Their lovely apartment, nestled close to local shops, bars, and restaurants, became a cozy haven amidst their busy schedules.
One standout memory for Stefan was the unforgettable weekend getaway to Charleston, South Carolina, with fellow interns. Exploring Charleston’s beaches, shops, and vibrant nightlife provided a perfect opportunity to bond and create lasting memories. It was a refreshing break from their daily routines and a chance to immerse themselves in the rich culture of the South.
Throughout his time in the Southeast, Stefan was struck by the warmth and friendliness of the people. Whether it was striking up conversations with locals or indulging in the delectable Southern cuisine, Stefan felt a genuine sense of hospitality wherever he went. The tantalizing flavors of Southern comfort food left an indelible impression, and he knew he would miss them dearly upon returning home.
The weather in the Southeast also captivated Stefan, especially the contrast of sunny days in January and the culinary surprises—deep-fried Oreos were a favorite!
Embracing the South’s love for jazz music and its distinctive lifestyle further enriched Stefan’s exchange experience, broadening his horizons and fostering a deeper appreciation for different ways of living.
In essence, Stefan’s exchange journey was not just about honing his greenkeeping skills but also about embracing new cultures, forging lifelong friendships, and gaining valuable insights into the diverse tapestry of American life.
When asked if Stefan would recommend the CAEP program, he proudly shared, “Yes, I would recommend the program to my friends and family back home. It’s been the best year of my life. I’ve had the opportunity to work on one of the best golf courses in the world and I have discovered loads of amazing things that I would never have seen in the United Kingdom. It has been a great experience for me, and I think anybody would benefit from doing it themselves.”
